Brunel University

Redesigned Brunel University's student portal to improve access to information and empower users with a self-serve experience.

Role UX/UI Designer

Context

A self-serve platform

Brunel University is a public research university in London named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a Victorian engineer and pioneer of the Industrial Revolution

The university aimed to make their student portal simpler and more user-friendly. We wanted to facilitate independent query resolution for students, ensuring they could readily find answers with minimal assistance - reducing friction for the users and cost for the university.

Problem

Long Response Times & No Self-service

The previous student portal was hard to use and relied heavily on response from student support, leading to long response times, frustrated students, and high costs for the university.

Improvements

Central Search Bar & Most Popular Q&As

We added the Q&As section for student's most popular questions for easily accessible information. We also added a portal search bar front and centre so users are prompted to search the portal for their needs if not in the Q&A section. CTAs were added for the three most commonly used

I opted for a simpler background as seen in the first version to ensure that the text and logo pop, and are easy to read, however the client wanted an image that showcased the greenery of the campus, and therefore we changed the background image to the second image.
